Masai Mara National Reserve - The Seventh Wonder of the World
|
|
Wildlife in the
Mara Triangle: The Masai Mara National
Reserve possesses a great variety of
mammals. Large beasts such as lion,
buffalo, elephant, hippopotamus,
leopard, giraffe and black rhinoceros
are very easily seen in the reserve.
Others mammals include Thomson's and
Grant's gazelles, cheetah, common zebra,
wildebeest, oribi, warthog, Coke's
hartebeest. Note also the presence of a
rare subspecies of topi and hartebeest
known as the jimela topi and the
Jackson's hartebeest respectively and of
the roan antelope (only seen in Shimba
Hills N.P. and in Mara). Birdlife in the
park is also abundant as more than 53
different species have been recorded.
Zebra and Wildebeest Migration:
The world's largest migration of
wildebeest and zebra takes place every
year between June and September. More
than 2 million wildebeests make their
safari northwards from Tanzania's
Serengeti National Park to eat the
lowest fresh green grass of the Mara -
the higher part being already eaten by
zebras who arrived a few weeks before
the gnus.
Balloon Safari/Night Safari: Balloon safaris are done very early
in the morning and most of the time
accompanied by a bush-breakfast with
champagne. The best period to fly is
July-August, that is during the gnus
migration. Night safaris can be an
alternative to experience the African
wilderness. Most animals are very active
during the night. |

Masai
Mara National Reserve is the most visited park in Kenya This
spectacular expanse of grassland covers 392 kmē and receives
ample water from the long Mara River. The western and
eastern borders of the park feature the Oloololo Escarpment
and the Loita Hills respectively. Northern continuation of
the Serengeti national park in Tanzania, Masai Mara has a
large concentration of game including large predators like
lions, leopards, cheetah, jackals, plains game and a huge
variety of birds, and is one of the few national
parks/reserves in Kenya to see the "Big Five" - Lion,
Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino and Leopard
The Masai Mara lies in the Great Rift Valley, which is a
fault line some 3,500 miles (5,600km) long, from Ethiopia's
Red Sea through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi and into Mozambique.
Here the valley is wide and a towering escarpment can be
seen in the hazy distance. Most of the game viewing
activities occur on the valley floor, but some lodges
conduct walking tours outside the park boundaries in the
hills of the Oloololo Escarpment. The animals are also at
liberty to move outside the park into huge areas known as
'dispersal areas'. There can be as much wildlife roaming
outside the park as inside. Many Masai villages are located
in the 'dispersal areas' and they have, over centuries,
developed a synergetic relationship with the wildlife.
There are four main types of topography in the Mara: Ngama
Hills to the east with sandy soil and leafy bushes liked by
black rhino; Oloololo Escarpment forming the western
boundary and rising to a magnificent plateau; Mara Triangle
bordering the Mara River with lush grassland and acacia
woodlands supporting masses of game especially migrating
wildebeest; Central Plains forming the largest part of the
reserve, with scattered bushes and boulders on rolling
grasslands favoured by the plains game
Masai Mara lies in Masai Country, here sunrise
and sunset are times to behold |
The Crocodile and hippo infested Mara River is a
major Attractions of the park |
The ecosystem of the Mara is unique as large open grass
plains are soaked by permanent rivers (Mara, Talek and Sand
River) which provide different habitats including plains,
riverine forests, swamps and beautiful sceneries.
The highlight of the Mara is the great migration of
wildebeest and zebra coming from the Serengeti in search of
lush grass - watching millions of gnus crossing in mass the
deadly Mara river is fascinating.

Masai Mara is world famous for its abundance of wildlife and
its unique ecosystem. The big cats seen in the park are
lions, cheetahs, and leopards. Lions are often found in
large prides and it's not uncommon to see them eating prey
early in the morning. Elephant, buffalo, and hippo roam in
large herds as well as the topi, impala, zebra and Coke's
hartebeest who are also abundant.
